Replacement of the Air Handling Units at the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels: An Exemplary Project carried out by CAIROX Belgium

Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels, also known as Bozar, takes pride of place in Belgium’s cultural heritage since it was officially listed in 1977. However, in January 2021 a fire broke out. As a result, the building required in-depth restoration and the replacement of the existing air handling units. This was the demanding situation facing CAIROX Belgium, a market-leading comprehensive heating, ventilation and air conditioning solutions provider, when it provided an exemplary service to meet this challenge.

Hans*, Koen et Danny, who handled the engineering and project management at CAIROX Belgium, respectively, steered this project with remarkable expertise. The project involved replacing the six modular air handling units and seven air pulsion and extraction units, a task that required technical precision and an in-depth understanding of the specific requirements of the Centre for Fine Arts.

One of the crucial parts was working in close partnership with the STRAUMANN-DHOOP installation company, which had specified that any new air units needed to be compatible with existing plenum spaces and needed to be suspended from a steel frame. In addition, the previous air handling units only had a limited energy recovery capacity. What they needed were air handling units that were suitable for use in public buildings, but that also operated on very low noise levels. CAIROX Belgium took up this challenge by designing the air handling units that met these complex requirements.

Our air handling units stand out from the crowd thanks to their sturdy, self-supporting design, which is both light-weight and durable due to the use of 50 mm-thick double-wall panels made from non-combustible material with a unique design. What’s more, the unit’s modular, user-friendly design makes both assembly and disassembly much easier, facilitating installation and maintenance for the technical staff at the Centre for Fine Arts.

One of the air handing unit’s most striking features is its flexible set-up. Its doors are equipped with detachable dual-layer safeguards against overpressure, so the air handling unit can be opened from the left or right as needed. This flexibility makes the installation process much easier, as it prevents any concerns around the positioning of the doors when making your order.

On top of this, the air handling units by CAIROX Belgium are compliant with the strictest energy recovery standards, offering maximum energy efficiency and optimum performance. These cutting-edge units have received the EUROVENT and PEB certifications (the latter being a Belgian standard for a building’s energy efficiency), offering a reliable and sustainable ventilation solution for the Centre for Fine Arts.

The air handling unit replacement project at the Centre for Fine Arts perfectly demonstrates CAIROX Belgium’s commitment to excellence and innovation in the fields of air conditioning and ventilation. CAIROX Belgium continues to leverage its technical expertise and cutting-edge solutions, such as its air handling units, to play a significant part in preserving and modernising Belgium’s historic buildings.

*Hans worked on this project for a long time. Unfortunately, however, he passed away before it was completed. We would like to pay tribute to him, and to offer our condolences to his family and friends.
